Waxing Moon: What to Do as the Moon Grows
The waxing moon is the two weeks after a new moon when the light grows each night. Here is what that stretch is for, and a simple practice for it.
The waxing moon is the stretch between a new moon and a full moon, about two weeks when the lit part of the moon grows a little each night. If the new moon is for naming what you want, the waxing moon is for taking the first steps toward it. It is the building half of the cycle: not the quiet beginning and not the bright arrival, but the part in between where things get made.
Right now the moon is doing exactly that. The new moon of Saturday 10 October fell in Libra, and the moon grows until the full moon on Monday 26 October at 4:12 am UTC in Taurus. You can see where it is tonight on the moon phase today page, and the dates for every month are on the moon calendar.
What a waxing moon is
After a new moon, the moon moves out from between the Earth and the sun, and a thin crescent appears low in the evening sky. Each night it sets a little later and shows a little more light. About a week in, it is half lit; that is the first quarter. Then it keeps filling, a shape called gibbous, until it is round and rises at sunset. The whole stretch, from the first sliver to the night before full, is the waxing moon.
The word is old. To wax is to grow. The other half of the month, when the light shrinks back toward the next new moon, is the waning moon. Together they make one cycle, and each phase has its own use.
What the waxing moon is for
People who work with the moon treat the waxing half as the time for doing. The intention was set at the new moon; now it needs a body. That can be as small as one email, one conversation, one hour given to the thing you said you wanted. The moon does not make anything happen. What it gives is a rhythm, a visible reason to act this week rather than someday, and a clear end point at the full moon, when you stop and look at what has arrived.
There is a kindness in this. You do not have to do everything at once. The moon takes two weeks to fill, and so can you.
A practice for the waxing moon
- Find your intention. Go back to what you named at the new moon. If you did not name anything, that is fine; choose one thing now, in a sentence that starts with "I am" or "I have". The guide to setting new moon intentions has a simple way to do this.
- Break it into a few small moves. Not a plan, just three or four things a person could do in an afternoon. Write them down where you can see them.
- Do one each time you notice the moon. When you catch it in the sky, or check it on your phone, take the next move off your list. The moon becomes a reminder you did not have to set.
- Say your line in the morning. Keep one affirmation for the two weeks and say it once a day, out loud if you can. Something like "I take the next step, and the next one shows itself."
- Keep a short record. One line a night: what you did, and what showed up. By the full moon you have a page of evidence that you were in motion. Then read what to do on a full moon and let yourself receive.
Lines to carry through a waxing moon
- I take the next step, and the next one shows itself.
- What I started is growing, even on the nights I cannot see it.
- I am allowed to begin before I feel ready.
- A little each day is enough.
- I meet what I asked for halfway.
Choose one. Five is a list; one is a practice.
The waxing moon and your chart
Each waxing moon has its own feel, set by the signs it moves through. This one began in Libra, a sign of balance and of what is given and returned, and it fills toward Taurus, a sign of slow, steady arrival. The October full moon page has lines for that night. Your own moon sign matters too: it describes how you receive, and the waxing moon is where receiving first begins to show.
Questions people ask
How long does a waxing moon last?
About fourteen and a half days, from the new moon to the full moon. The exact dates change each month, and they are all on the moon calendar.
Is the waxing moon good for manifesting?
It is the half of the cycle traditionally given to action and growth, so it suits the doing part of manifesting: the steps, the conversations, the small risks. The meaning is a reflection, not a cause. What changes is you, moving on a rhythm you can see.
What is the difference between waxing and waning?
Waxing is the moon growing brighter, from new to full. Waning is the moon growing dimmer, from full to new. One is for building; the other is for finishing and letting go.
Can I set a new intention during a waxing moon?
Yes. The new moon is the traditional start, but the waxing moon is forgiving. Name it now, take one step tonight, and you still have a full moon to meet it at.
